• Be at least 21 years of age (Requirement specific to Vision Truck Driving School)

• Meet the Texas DPS Residency Requirements

• Provide copy of High School Diploma, or equivalent or Valid Class "C" driver's license

• Complete the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination (Long Form required)

• Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screen.

• Texas driver’s license prior to enrollment, free of any outstanding tickets or warrants

• Provide a copy of your social security card or proof of your ability to work legally in the United States

• You must reside in the State of Texas

• Complete your Admissions Enrollment Application

• Be able to read and speak the English language and do simple arithmetic.

• No loss of a foot, a leg, a hand, or an arm (SEE BELOW)

• No diabetes requiring insulin for control (SEE BELOW)

• No heart problems (SEE BELOW)

• No respiratory dysfunction (SEE BELOW)

• No high blood pressure (SEE BELOW)

• No rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular problems that would affect vehicle control (SEE BELOW)

• No epilepsy or other condition likely to cause loss of consciousness (SEE BELOW)

• No mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with vehicle control (SEE BELOW)

• Vision 20/40 or better in each eye, not color blind (SEE BELOW)

• Have good hearing.

• No addiction to drugs

• No addiction to alcohol

• No felony convictions involving illegal drugs in a commercial vehicle.

• No DWI violations within the last 5 years

FMCSA currently has exemption programs for vision and insulin-treated diabetes mellitus and offers a certificate program for drivers with limb impairments. FMCSA also has a special certification program for drivers with missing and/or impaired limbs.

 

The truck driver must be medically qualified to not only drive the vehicle safely, but also to do pre and post trip safety inspections, secure the load and make sure it has not shifted. 

 

By regulation, Specific Medically Disqualifying Conditions Found Under 49 CFR 391.41 are Hearing Loss, Vision Loss, Epilepsy and Insulin Use.

Drivers who require a Diabetes or Vision exemption to safely drive a CMV in addition to those pre-printed on the certification form are disqualified until they receive such an exemption.
