FAQ
1. What's the difference between a Class A CDL and a Class B CDL?
The main difference between a Class A CDL and a Class B CDL is the type and size of vehicles you are allowed to drive. Here’s a breakdown:
Class A CDL
-
Required for vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, towing a trailer over 10,000 pounds.
-
Allows you to drive tractor-trailers, tanker trucks, livestock carriers, flatbeds, and most combination vehicles.
-
Typically required for long-haul trucking and jobs involving heavy freight transportation.
Class B CDL
-
Required for single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, but towing a trailer of 10,000 pounds or less.
-
Allows you to drive buses, delivery trucks, dump trucks, box trucks, and some smaller straight trucks.
-
Often used for local and regional jobs, such as school bus driving, waste management, or construction vehicles.
If you have a Class A CDL, you can also drive Class B vehicles, but a Class B CDL does not permit you to drive Class A vehicles.

2. Do I need to be a US citizen?
No, you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Texas. However, you must meet certain legal residency and documentation requirements. Here’s what you need:
Lawful Presence – You must be a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) or have valid authorization to work in the U.S. (such as a work visa or an employment authorization card).
Texas Residency – You must provide proof of residency in Texas, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement.
Valid Identification – You need acceptable identification, such as a passport, permanent resident card, or an employment authorization document (EAD).
Social Security Number (SSN) – A valid SSN is required for CDL issuance.
If you're a non-U.S. citizen but legally allowed to work in the U.S., you can still apply for a CDL in Texas as long as you meet these requirements.

At Vision, we do not offer in-house financing. However, we collaborate with TWC (Texas Workforce Commission) to assist with funding options.

4. What are endorsements and how to you obtain them?
CDL endorsements are special authorizations added to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) that allow you to operate specific types of vehicles or transport certain types of cargo. To obtain an endorsement, you must pass additional written and/or skills tests depending on the endorsement type.
Common CDL Endorsements
(H) Hazardous Materials (HazMat) – Required to transport hazardous materials. You must pass a TSA background check and a written test.
(N) Tank Vehicles (Tanker) – Required to drive tanker trucks carrying liquids or gases. You must pass a written test.
(X) Tanker & Hazardous Materials (Combo) – A combination of (N) Tanker and (H) HazMat endorsements. Requires both written tests and a TSA background check.
(T) Double/Triple Trailers – Required to pull double or triple trailers. You must pass a written test.
(P) Passenger – Required to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. You must pass a written and skills test.

Take the Written Test – Visit a Texas DPS office and pass the required exam(s).
Pass a Skills Test (if required) – Some endorsements (e.g., Passenger, School Bus) require a driving test.

5. Are their opportunities for women in the Trucking industry?
Absolutely! The trucking industry offers many opportunities for women, and the demand for drivers continues to grow. Women are increasingly joining the field as professional drivers, trainers, fleet managers, and even business owners.
Why Trucking is a Great Career for Women?
High Demand & Job Security – With a driver shortage in the U.S., companies are actively hiring and offering competitive pay.
Equal Pay – Trucking is one of the few industries where women earn nearly the same as men, since pay is often based on mileage or hours.
Career Growth – Women can move into roles such as owner-operators, trainers, dispatchers, or logistics managers.
Flexible Work Options – Many companies offer regional or local routes for those who prefer to be home more often.
Support Networks – Organizations like Women In Trucking (WIT) provide mentorship, resources, and support.
Challenges & How Women Are Overcoming Them
Safety Concerns – Many companies now provide safe parking options, security training, and female-friendly policies.
Work-Life Balance – Options like dedicated routes or team driving can help balance time on the road.
Industry Stereotypes – More women are breaking barriers, and companies are actively recruiting and supporting female drivers.
The industry is changing, and many companies welcome and encourage women to join trucking.
